WAYS TO HELP SAVE ENERGY YEAR ROUND
Here are some low cost – no cost energy saving ideas for you.
Stop drafts from coming in doors, windows or unit air conditioners
You can seal around window frames and door frames with caulking or weather-
stripping. When it’s not cooling season, stop drafts from the air conditioner by
using a cover for the unit.
Get the most efficient use from your clothes washer, dryer or dishwasher
Use these appliances only when you have a full load. For clothes washing use
cold or warm water, and keep the lint filter clean in your dryer. Try short cycles
in the dishwasher for everything but the dirtiest dishes.
Use passive solar heating on very sunny days during cooler weather
Open the drapes on windows facing south and let the sunshine in.
Don’t block heat registers
Always make sure that heat registers are not blocked by heavy curtains and
furniture. If you have adjustable registers, direct warm air flow across the floor.
Save on lighting costs
Always turn off lights that are not needed and keep lamps and fixtures clean.
Fluorescent lights provide the same amount and quality of light as incandescent
lamps, yet they use one-fourth the energy and they last almost 10 times as long.
Save while cooking
Match the size of your cooking pan to the electric range surface needed, and
cover pots to speed boiling. Only preheat your oven when necessary and if you
can, use your microwave instead.
Save more on electricity
Unplug electronic devices when not in use. Many new TV’s, and VCR’s use
electricity even when they are switched off. These “standby losses” can add
up to a constant 50 watts of use in a typical home. Switching off a power strip
will serve the same purpose as unplugging.
